Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

Viagra 100mg tablet contains an active component such as Sildenafil. This medication is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, which belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. It increases blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, which helps men achieve and maintain an erection. Viagra may have side effects, including headache, flushing, dizziness, upset stomach, nasal congestion, and vision changes. It should not be taken with certain medications or conditions, so it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional before using it. Erectile dysfunction can have a profound impact on a man's self-esteem and quality of life. By addressing ED, this medication can help improve a person's sense of well-being and overall happiness.
Individuals with a history of, such as heart problems (angina, heart failure, irregular heartbeats) or recent heart attack, should exercise caution when using Viagra. The sexual activity itself can strain the heart and can further increase the strain by increasing blood flow. Consult with a healthcare professional to assess the risks and benefits in such cases. This medication can cause a mild decrease in blood pressure. Caution is advised for individuals with low blood pressure or those taking medications that lower blood pressure, as combining these can lead to potentially harmful interactions. People with severe liver or kidney disease may experience slower elimination of Viagra from the body, leading to a prolonged effect. Dosage adjustments may be necessary in such cases.

Do not take Viagra 100mg if you are allergic to sildenafil or any of the ingredients in Viagra 100mg.Side Effects of Viagra 100mgWhat is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor?
A PDE5is a enzyme that helps maintain the blood flow in your penis. When there is a need to take sexual stimulation, such as when you are sexually excited, the cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) responsible for relaxing the smooth muscle of your blood vessels is released into your body. This causes the smooth muscle cells in your blood vessels to give off a substance called a relaxant. This helps you maintain a firm and sustained erection. A PDE5 inhibitor can result in a decreased effect on the cGMP cascade and an increased effect on the penile smooth muscle. This makes it more difficult for a man to achieve and maintain an erection when sexually stimulated.
How to use a PDE5 inhibitor
Viagra 100mg tablets are taken by mouth in the same way as the medications that you take for erectile dysfunction (ED): as needed, when you are sexually excited. Take the tablets at least 30 minutes before sexual activity. Do not take 2 tablets at the same time, or more often than 3 times a day. Do not take this medication more than once a day. If you are using Viagra 100mg tablets for 3 or 4 hours, or 2 tablets at the same time, take it for it all over again. If you are taking Viagra for erectile dysfunction (ED), you may not be able to achieve or maintain an erection for sexual activity for several hours. Additionally, you should not take Viagra for up to 4 hours after you take it.
